AUGUSTA — Maine’s attorney general says a state trooper was justified in shooting several rounds at a Minot man who had fired dozens of rounds from a high-powered rifle and a .45-caliber machine gun at police during a standoff in December.
Police were called to 44-year-old Michael Callahan’s home on Dec. 22 for a domestic disturbance report. For the next six hours, Callahan kept police at bay while firing weapons in their direction.
According to Attorney General Janet Mills, Trooper Paul Casey at one point fired 16 rounds through a window at Callahan, prompting him to come out unarmed within minutes.
Mills announced Tuesday that Casey was justified in shooting.
Mills said police seized more than 50 firearms from Callahan’s home, including 22 handguns, 26 rifles and six shotguns.
