WATERVILLE (AP) — A Winslow man charged with fatally shooting another man outside a Waterville bar may try to settle his case to avoid a trial.
Lawyers for 30-year-old Mathew Partridge appeared in court Wednesday and discussed with a judge and prosecutors setting a date for a settlement conference.
Partridge’s lawyer says that could come as soon as next month, WABI-TV reported.
Authorities said Partridge shot 26-year-old Justin Smith of China in the face with a handgun after an altercation Dec. 4 between two groups of men that started inside the pub and spilled outside.
Partridge’s lawyer said the shooting was a case of self-defense after Smith punched his client in the face.
If a settlement cannot be reached, the case is tentatively set to go to trial in August.
