Short Sand Hill car chase ends with multiple charges for Augusta man

AUGUSTA — A man with a history of driving convictions led police on a short car chase Friday along Townsend Road and Northern Avenue before the officer stopped him on foot in the Sand Hill area.

Stephen Wright, 33, of Augusta, was arrested for eluding, driving to endanger, refusing to submit to arrest, operating after habitual-offender revocation and violation of bail conditions.

Officer Nate Walker recognized Wright while driving west on Townsend Road, Augusta police Sgt. Christopher Shaw said. Walker turned around and tried to stop the vehicle, but Wright refused to pull over, Shaw said.

Wright eventually tried getting out of his car on Kendall Street, and Walker stopped him on foot, Shaw said.

Shaw said Wright doesn’t have a valid driver’s license, and Augusta police had arrested him on his three prior convictions.

“We are very familiar,” Shaw said. “The officer recognized him immediately as he drove by. Knew the driver, knew the car.”

Shaw said Wright is being held in the Kennebec County jail.
