PORTLAND — The Coast Guard is asking for help in identifying a mariner in distress who made a mayday call near the southern tip of Long Island in Blue Hill Bay.
Coast Guard officials in Portland received a call at 7:43 p.m. Monday from a male who gave his position west of Mount Desert Island, but did not provide the nature of his distress or the name of the vessel.
The Coast Guard launched a boat and searched throughout the night for a vessel in distress.
Severe fog hampered search efforts throughout the night. With clearing fog in the morning, the search was expected to continue.
The Coast Guard Northern New England Command Center number is 207-767-0303.
