AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul LePage will join Maine military leaders in a Battlefield Cross Memorial Ceremony at the Maine State House.

Brig. Gen. James Campbell, Adjutant General of Maine, says the ceremony will be held Friday afternoon. Memorial Day is Monday, but state government will be closed.

The Battlefield Cross is a symbolic representation for soldiers who have been killed in action, and its origins date back to the Civil War.

Four identification tags bearing the names of servicemen and women with ties to Maine who died during overseas operations will be added to the memorial during a solemn military ceremony. Identical identification tags will be presented to the family members who attend.

Since 2009, 50 names have been added to the memorial which remains on display in the Hall of Flags.
