BANGOR — Josh Woodard singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning to lift No. 6 Messalonskee to a 3-2 win against No. 3 Bangor in an Eastern Maine Class A quarterfinal tournament game Wednesday.

The Eagles scored twice in the fifth, taking advantage of two Bangor errors and RBI singles from Woodard and Jared Cunningham. They also scored in the third inning when Trevor Gettig reached on a dropped third strike, moved to third on Jake Dexter’s single and scored on a groundout from Cunningham.

The Eagles used four pitchers and escaped jams in the third and sixth innings. Dexter, who got the win, escaped in the third with one out and two runners on, and in the sixth, Devin Warren fanned a batter for the third out with the bases loaded.

Sam Houston tripled and scored for Bangor while Carl Farnham added an RBI single. Both teams are 11-6. Messalonskee, which lost to Bangor twice during the regular season, plays the winner of today’s game between Lewiston and Hampden on Saturday.

Western Maine Class D

No. 5 Greenville 8, No. 4 Forest Hills 4: Matt Turner and Nathan Jalbert each collected three singles for the Tigers in a losing effort to the Lakers in a Western Class D quarterfinal game in Jackman.

Turner pitched all seven innings for Forest Hills, which finishes 7-8.

Matt DiAngelo had a double and triple for Greenville (5-8).

Boys lacrosse

Eastern Maine Class A

No. 5 Messalonskee 9, No. 4 Lewiston 8: Jordon Holmes had three goals and an assist to lead the Eagles to the Eastern A quarterfinal victory in Lewiston.

Ben Weeks had two goals and two assists for Messalonskee (9-4). Brian Erskine, Aiden Calkins and Josh Wannelli also scored for Messalonskee, which will play at top-seeded Brunswick at noon Saturday.

Lewiston finished 8-5.

Softball

Eastern Maine Class A

No. 6 Oxford Hills 5, No. 3 Messalonskee 0: Abby Bernier had a double and a single in support of a dominant pitching performance by Cystal West to lead the Vikings to the quarterfinal victory.

West pitched a two-hit shutout and Anna Winslow had two hits for Oxford Hills (12-5).

Bri Garland and Courtney Veilleux had the lone hits for Messalonskee (12-5).
