The Knox County Sheriff’s Office on Friday reported the discovery of a body in the woods off Route 97 in Cushing.

The body is presumed to be that of 31-year-old Kevin Crute, of Cushing, missing since May 21. Positive identification, along with cause and manner of death, will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. An autopsy will be scheduled for sometime this weekend.

Crute’s family had been offering $10,000 for information that led directly to Crute’s whereabouts.

The investigation has been ongoing since the initial call from the family came on May 25. It was reported then that Crute had not been heard from since May 21.

Along with many other local agencies, members of the Sheriff’s Office and the Major Crimes Unit from the Maine State Police have been searching the area actively, following leads.

The Sheriff’s Office was to use the information it gathered to extend its search area with the assistance of the Maine Warden Service, Maine Search and Rescue, and dog teams. Crute’s body was found shortly before 10 a.m. Friday by a Maine Search and Rescue dog team.
