WEST PARIS — A Maine State Police trooper who shot an 18-year-old man over the weekend was involved in another shooting five years ago when he fired three shots at a western Maine man who was driving his pickup truck toward police.

Jason Wing was placed on administrative leave after shooting James Reynolds several times Saturday evening on a dirt road in West Paris.

Police said Reynolds was armed with a hunting rifle, but have released few other details about the shooting. Reynolds is recovering at Central Maine Medical Center.

Maine’s attorney general ruled in 2008 that Wing was legally justified in using deadly force when he fired three shots at Lawrence Lapoint, of Mexico, after Lapoint drove his truck at police on a logging road.

Lapoint escaped injury, but submitted to arrest.
