AUGUSTA — The Board of Education is scheduled to meet Wednesday to try to finalize the school budget.

The $27.4 million bottom line of the school budget was approved by voters in a citywide referendum question last week and on June 6 by city councilors as part of their approval of the combined city and school budget.

However, school board members still could change funding within the $27.4 million budget total.

City councilors suggested school officials take an additional $400,000 from the schools’ undesignated fund balance, which generally is made up of money unspent in previous years, on top of the $800,000 already coming from the fund balance, to fund the school budget.

However, some school board members have expressed concern that depleting the fund balance could result in a need to seek more money from taxpayers next year, because potentially there could be less money to take from fund balance to offset expenses.

Interim Superintendent James Anastasio said board members could decide tonight to make cuts as they finalize the budget.

The meeting’s public session is expected to begin at 7 p.m. in the central office conference room, which is in Hussey Elementary School.

Board members are scheduled to meet in a closed-door session at 6 p.m. to discuss personnel and labor relations.
