OAKLAND — Dr. Jeffrey Dempski, of Oakland, recently received the prestigious Hands and Heart Award from the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. The Award was established in 1980 and is given annually to a Veteran’s Administration employee who administers direct patient care and sets an example for others, going above and beyond the call of duty in responding to veteran medical needs, according to a news release.

In addition, Dempski received the Harvard Medical School Department of Ophthalmology Teacher of the Year for his contributions to the surgical training of residents at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary last year. He has also received the Maine Veterans Healthcare Hero Award at the 2012 Portland Healthcare Expo.

Dempski is a retired Naval captain and a member of the community for more than nine years and says that he finds Maine to be a great supporter of its veterans and is honored and proud to have the opportunity to continue to serve.
