TROY — The town of Troy’s former treasurer has been charged with stealing nearly $20,000 from the Waldo County community.

Police say 56-year-old Kathy Mattingly was charged this week with theft by unauthorized taking or transfer.

Mattingly was town treasurer from January 2012 until March, when she stepped down for what she called medical reasons.

Current treasurer Sharon Moody says most of the missing money was cash that passed through the tax collector’s office.

Mattingly is free on bail and is scheduled to make an initial court appearance July 25. It could not immediately be determined if she had a lawyer.

Police say the investigation is continuing.

Troy has a population of about 1,000.
