I witnessed our state Legislature’s failure to override the governor’s veto of the federally funded health care for Maine’s uninsured and came away with the sense that politics had once again triumphed over the common good.
Most of the Republican objections I heard to accepting the federal dollars were based on skepticism about what would happen at the end of the three-year period. What about those uninsured in our state who need health care coverage now and would get it with this program?
Jesus’ ministry gave special attention to those who were “the least, the lost and the last” in his society. These are the folks in our day with the least political clout. I pray for a governor and Legislature who will hear and respond to those less politically powerful voices.
