HANCOCK — Maine state police say a sport utility vehicle smashed into a parked vehicle in the town of Hancock, claiming two lives.

Troopers say one of the four occupants died at the scene, and the driver was pronounced dead at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. The other two passengers were treated for injuries and released from the hospital.

Killed in the crash were 20-year-old Edward Fowler of Franklin, who was the driver, and 16-year-old Brittany Poors of Ellsworth, who was a passenger in his vehicle.

Police say it appears that none of the occupants was wearing a seatbelt.

The accident occurred just after 11 p.m. Monday, when a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Fowler pulled out of Tideway Market and headed north on Route 1 toward Sullivan. The vehicle started to pass another vehicle when it went off the road, striking a parked pickup truck and rolling over.
