WATERVILLE — The public is getting its first look at the newly expanded art museum at Colby College.

The Colby College Museum of Art formally opens to the public Sunday following completion of an addition that makes it the state’s largest art exhibition space with 38,000 square feet.

The Alfond-Lunder Family Pavilion adds 10,000 square feet of exhibition space and serves as the museum’s entrance.

The addition became necessary after Maine natives Peter and Paula Lunder donated about 500 works from their private collection to the museum. The college hopes that the improvements will lift the state’s profile as an art destination.
