LIBERTY — An Augusta man was killed Tuesday morning when his car was hit head on by a van on Route 3.

Gary Diffin, 69, died at the scene of the crash, which occurred around 8:15 a.m., said Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

Ethan Hopkins, 23, of Orland, who was driving the GMC van that hit Diffin’s 2004 Saturn sedan, was taken by ambulance to Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast with non life-threatening injuries, Trafton said.

Hopkins told deputies he had dozed off before the crash. Trafton said Hopkins’ van drifted across the centerline and into the path of Diffin’s vehicle.

Nobody had been charged in connection with the crash as of Thursday, but the investigation is ongoing, Trafton said.
