CAPE ELIZABETH — With the Boston Marathon bombing fresh on their minds, 6,000 runners were at the start line for Maine’s biggest road race.
The starting horn for Saturday’s Beach to Beacon 10-kilometer race in Cape Elizabeth was sounded by Karen Rand, a former Westbrook resident who lost one of her legs in a blast at the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15.
Additional security was on hand, but runners and spectators probably won’t notice.
The race is in its 16th year and draws runners from across the U.S. and elite athletes from around the world. Race founder Joan Benoit Samuelson said before the race that the sport is “strong and resilient.”
