AUGUSTA — Firefighters battled an early morning blaze today that destroyed a garage at 277 State St.

Fire Chief Roger Audette said their efforts saved the house, which was 25 feet away at the same address.

Investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office were called in to determine how the blaze started. Sgt. Kenneth Grimes, of that agency, said Tuesday afternoon that investigators were still unsure how or where the fire started.

The property is owned by Judith Stackpole, of Cambridge, Mass. No one was there at the time of the fire.

Audette said the alarm was called in at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday and firefighters were on the scene for two hours. The site is across State Street from the main office of the Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife.

“Upon arrival, the garage was fully involved,” Audette said.

Gardiner and Togus fire departments assisted at the scene and provided backup coverage for Augusta firefighters.
