A Cumberland County woman has died of injuries suffered when she was thrown from her car last week during a crash on Interstate 295 in Bowdoinham.

Mona Lee Kelley, 56, of Steep Falls, died Friday at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where she had been listed in critical condition.

Kelley was flown to the hospital Aug. 6 after her car left the southbound lane and overturned several times in the median. Kelley, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the car during the crash.

Several drivers called police prior to the crash to report Kelley’s car was being driven erratically. One of those callers claimed Kelley had hit a guardrail in Gardiner and continued to drive. Police were searching for the car when the rollover was reported around 6 p.m., on Interstate 295.

“Troopers suspect alcohol was a factor in the crash,” McCausland said.

An obituary in the Portland Press Herald indicates Kelley was born and raised in Portland and attended Portland schools before moving to Steep Falls.
