WEST BROOKFIELD, Mass.  — A 69-year-old man who had recently moved from Maine has been struck and killed by a car while walking across a West Brookfield street.

Police say Robert Herrie Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck while crossing Route 9 at about 6:45 p.m. Monday.

Herrie had crossed the eastbound lane and was struck in the westbound lane.

Police say he was from Brownfield but neighbors tell The Telegram & Gazette of Worcester that he had recently moved into a nearby apartment complex because his son lived in town.

The car that struck him stopped. It was a 2012 Kia Optima driven by a 65-year-old Sturbridge man who has not been charged. He had a 90-year-old female passenger and a dog in the car.

A reconstruction team was at the scene taking photographs and measurements, according to The Telegram & Gazette.

Neighbors say residents of the apartment complex frequently cross the busy street to shop at a nearby convenience store.
