MONMOUTH — Police are warning residents to lock their car doors after a pair of vehicles were reported stolen this week.

Chief Kevin Mulherin said a commercial van was stolen Sunday from Wilson Pond Road and a Saturn was taken from North Main Street this morning. The van was recovered Tuesday on North Main Street and the Saturn was recovered in neighboring Leeds a few hours after it was stolen.

The van had minor damage from the thief’s attempt to take off a sticker with a company name, Mulherin said. Grass and other debris was stuck to the van suggesting it had been driven off road. The Saturn was found abandoned after it did skid off the road.

Mulherin said both vehicles are being examined for clues. He is unsure whether the thefts are connected.

Both the stolen vehicles were unlocked and the keys were inside. Mulherin urged residents to remove the keys and lock their doors. According to police agencies, most car burglaries occur in vehicles that are unlocked.

Mulherin asked anyone with information about the thefts, or noticed suspicious activity in the area, to call police at 933-9089.
