WATERVILLE — A burst pipe at the Hannaford supermarket at Elm Plaza closed the store for two hours this evening.

Hannaford workers were on the sidewalk earlier tonight, handing out cookies and telling incoming shoppers that the store would be closed until 7 p.m.

Around 5 p.m., a burst sprinkler pipe caused a downpour of water in the delicatessen section, according to Elizabeth Hammond, who was cashing out when the incident occurred.

“It looked like it was raining from the ceiling,” Hammond said.

The Waterville Fire Department went to the scene with one ladder truck and three engine trucks.

Hammond said an announcement was made over the supermarket’s intercom system telling everyone to leave the store.

The fire department said incident was isolated to the deli department and water power was restored to the store at 6 p.m.
