MONMOUTH — Police have arrested two boys in connection with the theft of a car and a van earlier this week.

Police Chief Kevin Mulherin said Friday a 14-year-old from Monmouth and a 16-year-old from Leeds were arrested and released to the custody of their parents pending court hearings.

The boys are charged with unauthorized use of motor vehicles.

Mulherin said the boys are not related to the vehicle owners and that the vehicles were apparently taken for joy rides.

A commercial van belonging to an electrical contractor was stolen Sunday from Wilson Pond Road and a Saturn was stolen Wednesday from North Main Street.

The van was recovered Tuesday on North Main Street and the Saturn was recovered in neighboring Leeds a few hours after it was stolen.

The van had minor damage from an attempt to remove a sticker bearing a company name, Mulherin said. Grass and other debris was stuck to the van, suggesting it had been driven off-road. The Saturn was found abandoned after it skidded off the road.

“We recovered the majority of the owner’s property in the first vehicle,” Mulherin said on Friday.

Mulherin added that the investigation is continuing and credited Monmouth Police Officer Mike Parshall and Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Deputy Jon Guay with collaborating to solve the case.
