An event featuring award-winning country musicians from across the state Sunday aims to raise money to help Maine’s homeless veterans.

Last year the event was in Waterville and raised $25,000.

This year, the Debbie Myers and Friends Benefit for Maine’s Homeless Veterans, is at the Augusta Elks Lodge.

The money raised from ticket sales, advertisements and auctions at the event will help pay for the Maine Homeless Veterans Stand Down at VA Maine Healthcare Systems at Togus.

That event brings hundreds of homeless veterans to Togus, where they receive a multitude of services and supplies, including counseling, housing information, winter coats and other clothing, medical exams and a good meal.

“It’s a day for homeless vets. We try to get as many of them as we can off the street to come in for a meal, haircuts, winter boots, clothing, toothpaste bedding,” said Myers. “All the things we take for granted.”

Myers, of Chelsea, added, “It’s our way of giving back. They’ve done so much for us.”

Myers has won multiple awards from the Maine Academy of Country Music, toured internationally, has three top-10 hit singles on Canadian radio and has shared the stage with artists including Anne Murray, according to her website.

Performers including Myers, Denny Breau, Joan Kennedy, Peter Allen and Emerald Sky will donate their time to play at the fundraiser.

The benefit starts at noon Sunday and continues until 6 p.m.

“It will be an afternoon of great music,” Myers said. “It’s supporting our homeless veterans. Hopefully people will want to give back like we all do.”

The event will also feature both silent and live auctions. Myers said more than 125 items were donated for the silent auction, and the live auction will include guitars autographed by the performers.
