BANGOR — An eastern Maine man charged with murder is pleading guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter in a fatal shooting outside his house.

Prosecutors say Michael Carter of Lamoine has agreed to a 30-year sentence with all but 16 years suspended in exchange for having the charge downgraded. He’s scheduled to appear Wednesday in Penobscot County Superior Court in Bangor.

Carter was charged with fatally shooting 32-year-old Lawrence “Randy” Sinclair Jr. of Lamoine and injuring two other men in March 2012.

According to a police affidavit, the shooting was precipitated by a dispute between Carter and one of the injured men over a paint job on Carter’s truck.

Police said Carter held a handgun about 12 inches from Sinclair’s head and fired as Sinclair was trying to drive away.
