WOBURN, Mass. – The son of Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy has been indicted by a Middlesex grand jury on a murder charge in the death of his girlfriend.

Jared Remy has already pleaded not guilty in District Court in the Aug. 15 stabbing death of Jennifer Martel. The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday that Remy will now be arraigned Oct. 8 in Middlesex Superior Court.

Remy is accused of repeatedly stabbing Martel at a Waltham apartment complex and slashing at neighbors who tried to help her. He was arrested at the scene, covered in Martel’s blood.

After his son’s arrest, Jerry Remy announced he wouldn’t return to the broadcast booth this season and said he was “full of grief” for Martel’s family.

Two days before Martel’s death, authorities had arrested Remy and accused him of pushing Martel into a mirror, which resulted in him being charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

On Aug. 14, he was released on personal recognizance in that case.

The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office has defended its decision not to seek to have Remy held on bail in the assault case, saying Martel had chosen not to pursue a restraining order against him.

Remy has a violent criminal history, including 15 charges since 1998, according to Waltham court records.

Two veteran prosecutors have been assigned to conduct an independent review of the circumstances surrounding the murder case.
