Maine the Clean Election State is now forcing all of our would-be governors to engage in a high-stakes money chase.
Too bad for the vast majority of Maine people who support our Clean Election system and its great benefits for candidates.
Worse, these candidates are not running under rules that allow a single donor to give thousands of dollars. I thought this sort of race would be a thing of the past once we had Clean Elections. But I guess Gov. Paul LePage doesn’t agree, so his budget cut all of the funding.
And I guess the Legislature doesn’t agree either, since they went along with the cuts. Not to their own Clean Election program, though, just for the candidates for governor.
It’s time for citizens to step up and revive the Clean Election system.
