A registered sex offender was charged with having prohibited contact with a minor after parents told police he was with children at an athletic field this weekend.

Police said Timothy Hayes, 49, of Prentiss Plantation, was seen with two young boys sitting on his lap during athletic games at the Fairfield Police Athletic Field.

On Saturday, Clinton police arrested Hayes and charged him with having prohibited contact with a minor, a class D crime punishable by up to 364 days in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Parents initially contacted Clinton police Chief Craig Johnson about the incident, but he would not say where they or the children lived.

Johnson contacted the Fairfield Police Department and the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department because Hayes lives in Prentiss Plantation, which is in Penobscot County.

Hayes’ name was placed on the Maine Sex Offender Registry in 2011, when he was convicted of unlawful sexual contact, according to police.

According to the registry’s website, Hayes is a lifetime registrant and also has been convicted of gross sexual misconduct.

He is prohibited from having contact with children under 14.

Johnson said Clinton police are continuing their investigation to determine how many instances of inappropriate contact might have taken place, and he said other charges could be filed against Hayes.

Fairfield police Chief Thomas Gould said Hayes was “acting suspiciously” around two young boys, aged 6 and 8.

“He was having physical contact,” Gould said. “They were sitting on his lap.”

Hayes is being held in the Kennebec County jail and is scheduled to appear at 1 p.m. Dec. 11 in Skowhegan District Court.
