UNITY — Maine residents are getting a chance to hear about the state’s apple history, learn how to make cider and taste rare and heirloom apples.

The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association is hosting the Great Maine Apple Day on Sunday. The annual event is being held at the organization’s Common Ground Education Center in Unity.

Events include workshops such as “The Basics of Cider Making” by award-winning cider maker Claude Jolicoeur.

Participants can also take a tour of the organization’s new orchard, which will be planted in April. It will include more than 500 apple specimens from every county in the state, including many apple varieties now on the verge of extinction.
