HAMPDEN — Maine State Police are seeking the identity of a middle-aged woman whose body was found by kayakers in the Penobscot River.

Officials say the body was found Monday morning floating in the river about 20 to 30 feet offshore in Hampden. The body, which appeared to be in the water for a few days, has been taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

The woman appears to be in her 50s or 60s, has short, reddish hair and was wearing blue jeans and a leather-like coat.

Detectives say they’ll be reviewing missing person reports.
