Most of the letters on the issue of access to China Lake were for or against such an idea. I’ll let the voters decide.

As for funding such a purchase, however, the town should replace the loss of tax value with some other town-owned land. The town has just sold a home for about $28,000. Other options could include selling the house lot on Lake View Drive with barn at the corner of Alder Park Road, the land next to the transfer station for some industrial use, the 380 acres on York Town Road as one piece or in blocks, the islands in China Lake, and even the one-room school house in Weeks Mills.

If the voters wish to gain another 9 acres on China Lake, that’s fine, enough land is listed above to cover the costs and add to the tax base at the same time.

At this time, I think the public has about 1,400 feet of frontage at the causeway at north end of lake, about 580 feet at the causeway on Fire Road 61, boat access on town landing road (maybe this needs to be better marked), about 300 feet at the Four Seasons Club for a small membership fee and the boat landing on Route 32 in Vassalboro.

With enough cash, we could buy greater access off Fire Road 61 as well.

Please be sure to vote.
