Every year, Nov. 11 is a day for Americans to remember and honor those who have fought for our freedom.

We all have friends or family members who have protected our country by serving in the military. Mainers in our community have served from World War II to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many young men and women today must be prepared for deployment at a moment’s notice and leave behind their families and jobs. Our military members and their families make big sacrifices for our country, and they deserve recognition.

Often spending a long time away from home, our veterans have had experiences beyond describing. We cannot take for granted the tough decisions they make to serve.

Be sure to show your appreciation to a veteran or service member you know. It’s our duty to honor those who have put their lives on the line for our country. They deserve the utmost respect for their hard work and dedication.
