CORNVILLE — The drivers of two cars were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life threatening Tuesday morning after a head-on collision on Route 43 that may have been caused by excessive speed, according to police.

Christina Foisy, 32, of Madison, was northbound in a 2009 Kia when her car struck a southbound 2011 Subaru station wagon driven by Ralph Bigelow, 55, of Embden, according to Lt. Dale Lancaster of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

Lancaster said investigators believe Foisy was traveling at a high rate of speed and crossed into the southbound lane, also known as Shadagee Road, causing the head-on collision. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Foisy’s leg was pinned under the dashboard of her car. She was extricated from her car by emergency personnel using hydrolic extrication tools, according to Cornville Fire Chief Kenneth Hogate.

Both Foisy and Bigelow were taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan by EMS ambulance, Lancaster said. Both cars were destroyed, he said.

Lancaster said Foisy later was transferred from the Skowhegan hospital to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with non-life threatening injuries to her leg.

Ralph Bigelow was treated and released from the Skowhegan hospital.

Route 43 was closed between Route 150 and South Solon Road from about 10:30 a.m. when the accident happened until about 2:15 p.m. The accident was about two miles west of Route 150.

State police reconstructed the accident as part of the investigation, Lancaster said. The results of the investigation will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office once the report is complete, he said.
