AUGUSTA — Two Augusta men are facing charges after police responded to a pair of domestic assaults Friday.

Brian Monson, 40, and Israel Gagne, 37, were each charged with aggravated assault and held without bail over the weekend at the Kennebec County jail. Neither suffered serious injuries.

Monson was arrested around 9 p.m. Friday by police responding to a complaint of an assault against a woman on Green Street. Deputy Chief Jared Mills of the Augusta Police said the charge against Monson was aggravated because he used a dangerous weapon during the attack. Mills declined to specify what kind of weapon Monson allegedly used.

The victim was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, Mills said.

Gagne was arrested that same evening by police responding to a report of an assault against a woman on Mount Vernon Avenue. An affidavit filed in Kennebec County Superior Court by Augusta Police Officer Michael Unterkoefler claims Gagne strangled his girlfriend with his hands to a point that she was unable to breathe.
