WATERVILLE — Colby College men’s soccer coach Mark Serdjenian, who spent 42 years as the school as both a player and a coach, resigned as the Mules head coach on Thursday.

Serdjenian, a 1973 Colby graduate, led the men’s soccer program for the past 38 years. He will continue to be an assistant coach for the Colby women’s lacrosse team and will have other adminstrative duties, according to a press release from the school.

“Mark Serdjenian is the heart and soul of Colby men’s soccer. I personally want to thank Mark for everything he has given to the program. He has given so much to so many, myself included,” Colby athletic dirctor Marcella Zalot said in the release. “You will not find a better man than Mark Serdjenian. The quality of Mark as a person and the influence he has had on so many young men will be one of his many lasting legacies.”

Serdjenian ends his career at Colby with a 261-230-46 record and is the all-time win leader in program history.

“I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to work at my alma mater with many dynamic young men, players, friends and colleagues during my head coaching career. “Serdjenian said. “The common bond has been our love for Colby, each other and the beautiful game of soccer.”

Serdjenian was a three-year start and all-Maine selection as a goalkeeper for the Mules men’s soccer team. He was a co-captain under coach Jack Scholz in 1972.

He took over as head coach in 1976 after Colby went 2-10. He won just four games in the first two years but then Colby went 11-2-1 and won the Eastern Athletic Conference New England Division II and III title in 1978.

Serjenian was the Associate Dean of Students for Academics at Colby for 23 years, starting in 1984. He joined the Colby Department of Athletics on a full-time basis for the 2007-08 academic year.

Serdjenian led the Mules to a 13-1-2 record in 1990 and was the top-ranked team in New England Division III soccer. The Mules had a 12-0-2 regular season and were ranked as high as sixth nationally.

After a semifinal ECAC appearance in 1992, Colby finished 16-1-1 in 1993 and won the ECAC New England Division III title. The 1994 and 1998 teams also made ECAC appearances.

Serdjenian was named New England Division III and Maine Coach of the Year after the 1990 season. He also was Maine Coach of the Year in 1993. Serdjenian had three players earn All-American honors and 14 players make the All-New England Team since 1990.
