As chairman of the Pastoral Council at Sacred Heart Church in Hallowell, I am writing to thank everyone who gave their support to keep our church open. Their prayers, letters and expressions of solidarity made a difference.

I also want to thank Father Frank Morin, Monsignor Andrew Dubois and Bishop Richard Malone for their ability to listen, to consider new ideas and to ultimately support our continued existence as a worship community. There is a new spirit in the Catholic Church today, starting at the top with Pope Francis, and it is a source of great hope to us all.

Finally, to those who have read the excellent Kennebec Journal stories about our little church and wondered what the fuss was all about, I extend an invitation — come on by at 4 p.m. Saturday or 9 a.m. Sunday and find out.
