Why does your newspaper and other media find it necessary to report things in a story that are not relevant?

I knew Jillian Jones. Yes, she had a past, but who among us has never done something we have not regretted? She was a beautiful young woman who was doing what she could to turn her life around. Was it necessary to bring up past convictions in the article about her senseless and horrific murder? Shame on you for wanting to make a better story for yourselves, rather than having compassion for another person and for the family who is going through this time of tragedy.
