HARTFORD, Conn. — Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is joining 13 other governors in asking Congress to adequately fund home heating assistance for low-income residents.
The governors want Congress to fund the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, at $3.6 billion, at the level the Senate passed for fiscal year 2014. The governors said LIHEAP funding has been cut by more than 40 percent since 2010, when $5.1 billion was allocated.
Besides Malloy, the governors of Maine , Massachusetts, Colorado, Vermont, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Delaware, Minnesota, Puerto Rico, Maryland, Illinois, West Virginia and the U.S. Virgin Islands signed on to the letter, sent earlier this week.
In the letter, the governors called LIHEAP “a critical bridge for Americans,” including the elderly, disabled and those with dependent children who are struggling financially.
