ORONO — Freshman Blaine Byron scored a power play goal with 3 minutes, 33 seconds left in the third period to help lift the University of Maine men’s hockey team past UMass-Lowell 4-2 in a Hockey East game Sunday at Alfond Arena.

Byron’s slapshot from the left circle just got past UMass-Lowell goalie Connor Hellebuyck to break a 2-2 tie.

Ben Hutton and Cam Brown also scored for Maine (7-6-1, 4-2-1). UMass-Lowell had its six game unbeaten streak snapped and dropped to 11-5-0.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Fairfield 80, Maine 59: Felicia DeCruz scored 19 points and Brittany Obi-Talbot added 18 to lead Fairfield past in the championship game of the Brown Classic in women’s basketball action Sunday.

Kristin Schatzlein added nine points for Fairfield.

Ashleigh Roberts scored a team-high 19 points to pace Maine (5-3). It was her eighth consecutive game scoring at least 10 points. Liz Wood scored 12 points and nine rebounds. Chantel Charles added eight for the Black Bears.

Boys basketball

Spruce Mountain 66, Madison 42: John McKenna scored 14 points and Anthony York added 11 as Sprunce Mountain rolled past Madison in a Mountain Valley Conference game Saturday.

Derek LeBlanc scored 17 points to pace the Bulldogs while Jared Miller had eight points.

Also Sunday: Madison native Samantha Bruce scored 19 points to help Central Maine Community College (11-1) cruise past Hampshire College 87-24. … Cony graduate Erin Bolduc, a freshman at Husson, finished 19th in the 60 meter hurdles in 10.37.
