CANAAN — Lodge 13 of the Fraternal Order of Police, recently presented Pastor Kevin Brooks of the Canaan Calvary Church with a $750 check donation for the Canaan Giving Tree, a non-profit community charity that Pastor Brooks administers for the community.

Lodge 13 is the bargaining unit representing the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department Law Enforcement Division law enforcement staff members. The Canaan Giving Tree was established years ago and was once administered by the Canaan Grange members to help area children by providing gifts for disadvantaged children in Canaan, who might not receive much for Christmas. As the Grange membership began to shrink, the Canaan Calvary Church was asked to consider administering this community charity. The Canaan Calvary Church has been overseeing the Canaan Giving Tree charity for the last six years.

The Giving Tree also works to provide coats, boots and other clothing for disadvantaged children. The Church works in conjunction with the Canaan Elementary School, and parents of students, in order to identify children in need. In the past, the local Canaan ATV club with its Toy Drive had provided toys in which parents were allowed to choose a toy that they could then give to their children. However, this year there was no Toy Drive. As a result, members of the Canaan Calvary Church have stepped up and purchased toys to be added to the Giving Tree.

The monetary donation received from Lodge 13 of the Fraternal Order of Police will be used to buy coats, boots and other gift items for the Giving Tree. Those involved with managing the Giving Tree greatly appreciate the monetary gifts that have enabled them, along with the members of the church, to help meet needs and provide gifts at Christmas time for disadvantaged children. Anyone desiring to donate to the Canaan Giving Tree can do so by sending gifts to: Canaan Calvary Church, P.O. Box 6, Canaan, 04924, and designating the package or envelope “gift for the Giving Tree”.
