Portland man faces drug charge

AUGUSTA — A Portland man convicted as a teenager of manslaughter in the shooting death of a friend has been charged with trafficking drugs in Augusta.

Sokrouhn Ung, 34, was arrested Tuesday on charges of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs and violating conditions of release.

The arrest stems from a November warrant check at the Motel 6 on Edison Drive. According to an affidavit filed in Kennebec County Superior Court by Agent Brian Wastella of the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, Ung and a woman were present when Augusta police searched the room and found a digital scale, clear plastic baggies, syringes, a metal spoon with white residue, an envelope that appeared to be used as a ledger and a clear glass vial with white residue. Police also found several baggies of cocaine inside a sock apparently dropped out the hotel room window after police arrived at the motel but before they entered the room.

Ung, then known as Sochean Ung, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in 1998 after shooting his 12-year-old friend. Prosecutors said at the time that the shooting was unintentional. Ung, who was 17 at the time and recently released from the Maine Youth Center, was with friends inside a Portland apartment playing with a pair of revolvers. At first, the boys were pointing and “dry firing” the unloaded weapons at each other while in the basement of the building. Later, upstairs in a bedroom, Ung’s friend was looking at jewelry on a dresser when Ung loaded one of the guns with a bullet or two, pointed the gun at his friend, and squeezed the trigger, prosecutors said. The boy died from a gunshot wound to the left temple, a shot fired from no more than a foot away.
