CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Monmouth senior Dylan Thombs held off a pack of Mt. Abram skiers to win the Mountain Valley Conference 5-kilometer freestyle race Friday at Sugarloaf.

Thombs won the race in 15 minutes 20.9 seconds.

Mt. Abram skiers Thomas Farraday (15:36.7), who was runnerup, Xavier Romanoski (17:16.1) and Courtland Talmage (18:02.9) followed closely.

Mt. Ararat’s Sam Wood won the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference boys freestyle title in 14:23.0. He beat out Maranacook’s Ethan Harriman, who finished in 15:41.5.

Maranacook had big days from Jason Stevenson, Colby Watts and Austin Landry as well. Stevenson finished ninth in 16:43, Watts was 10th (16:44.4) and Landry was 11th (17:00.6).

On the girls side, Monmouth’s Becki Bryant was second in the MVC freestyle race in 19:41.4. Isabel Gerencer, of St. Dom’s, won the race in 19:08.8.

Jada Choate, of Winthrop, was third in 20:32.9.

In the KVAC race, Maranacook senior Hannah Despres was third in 19:47.4.

College

Colby skiers Amy Bianco and Olivia Amber each posted top-15 finishes at the 5-kilometer skate at the Dartmouth Carnival.

Bianco was 13th in 15:50.7 while Amber was 14th in 15:52.1.

John Dixon led the Colby men with a 25th-place finish. He finished in 27:39.6.

The Colby women finished fifth and the men seventh at the event.
