FARMINGTON — The Monmouth girls ski team won the Mountain Valley Conference Nordic championship Saturday with a strong performance at Titcomb Mountain on the second day of competition.

The Mustangs finished with 61 points to 101 for runner-up Telstar and 110 for third-place Winthrop. Mt. Abram placed fourth, Becki Bryant led Monmouth with a second-place finish with a two-race time of 42 minutes, 9.8 seconds. Jordyn Mann (47:52) and Shannon Buzzell (48:15.6) finished eighth and ninth, respectively.

“This is really exciting,” Monmouth coach Chris Bryant said. “I told them going into the weekend they had a good shot at taking it.”

Monmouth senior Dylan Thombs won the MVC Classical race with a two-race time of 32.18.7, a day after winning the freestyle race.

“This race was real important to him,” Bryant said. “He came in second last year.”

Mt. Abram had the next two finishers, Thomas Farraday (33:34.7) and Xavier Romanosky (36:52.6) en route to winning the MVC boys championship.

The Mt. Blue girls won the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Nordic title, ahead of runnerup Maranacook. Mt. Blue skiers Sarah Wade and Julia Ramsey finished first and second, respectively, in the women’s classical race. Wade finished with a two-race total time of 38 minutes, 18.4 seconds. Ramsey finished with a time of 41:12.6. Maranacook’s Hannah Despres was third (41:50).

Maranacook also finished second in the boys race losing to Leavitt in the pursuit event by a point on the final day of competition and finishing a point ahead of Mt. Blue.

“Our (boys) skied great today,” Maranacook coach Steve DeAngelis said. “All of our kids either held their position or gained spots in the pursuit.”

Sam Wade, of Mt. Ararat, won the boys pursuit race followed by Maranacook’s Ethan Harriman. Dustin Staples and Dan Lesko finished sixth and seventh, respectively, for Mt. Blue while Maranacook placed five skiers — Colby Watts, Austin Landry, Luca DeAngelis, Jason Stevenson and Calen Mendall — in ninth through 13th place. On Friday, the Mt. Blue boys had three of the top seven finishers in the men’s Classical race. Doiron was fourth (33:17.5) while Staples (33:41.6) and Lesko (33:50) followed in sixth and seventh, respectively. Harriman, of Maranacook, was second with a two-race time of 32:44.1.

LYNDON STATE 62, THOMAS 58, OT: The Hornets rallied in regulation and won in overtime in the North Atlantic Conference game in Lyndon Center, Vt. Emily Gray and Chelsea Watson led the winner with 16 points each. Gardiner graduate Katie McAllister led the Terriers (3-18, 3-11) while Elizabeth Goodall scored 16 points, Waterville grad Ashleigh Gagne added nine rebounds and four blocked shots and Gardiner grad Kelly Macomber eight rebounds and four blocks.

JOHNSON STATE 66, UMF 65: Ashley Goodard hit a pair of free throws down the stretch to seal the close NAC win for Johnson State.

Brittany Robertson led Johnson (7-13, 7-7 NAC) with 21 points. Lindsey Renquist led UMF (8-14, 7-7) with 17 points.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

LYNDON STATE 90, THOMAS 61: David Johnson had 31 points and seven rebounds to lead Lyndon to the North Atlantic Conference win in Lyndon Center, Vt.

Jojo Woodruff added 25 points for the Hornets (10-11, 10-4 NAC). Garen Manzo had 13 points and eight rebounds for Thomas (9-12, 9-5).

UMF 74, JOHNSON STATE 63: Pet Sumner scored 23 points to lead the Beavers to the NAC win in Johnson, Vt.

Marancook grad Ben Johnson scored 15 points for UMF (8-12, 6-7 NAC). Nate Carson grabbed 12 rebounds for the Beavers.

Brian Hickey led Johnson State (5-15, 1-11) with 23 points.

MEN’S HOCKEY

COLBY 3, HAMILTON 2, OT: Ben Chwick scored on the first shot of overtime to lead the Mules to the New England Small College Athletic Conference win in Clinton, N.Y. Nick Lanza and Jack Bartlett assisted. Lanza and Geoff Sullivan scored second-period goals for Colby while Patrick Curtis scored twice for Hamilton. Sam Parker finished with 31 saves for Colby (10-7-3, 3-9-2) while Chris Fennell stopped 25 shots for Hamilton (4-12-3, 3-9-2).

Also Saturday: Maranacook graduate Kyle Boucher scored 20 points to lead Maine Maritime past New England College.
