On two occasions, I’ve had to call on Sen. Susan Collins. The first was to get my husband’s Purple Heart for his service in Vietnam.

I tried for years to get it myself and kept being rejected: records had been borrowed and hadn’t been returned, then records had been burned. Then I was told I would be prosecuted for being a fraud.

I called on Collins and her staff, and they got his Purple Heart. He died 10 months later.

Then, I was denied my widow’s pension.

Her staff counseled me and occasionally called me to see how I was doing. Then, I received a call from her office that my case had been settled, and that I would receive my full year’s compensation.

God bless Sen. Susan Collins and her staff for being true public servants.

Oh, I’m a Democrat.
