A teenager and a Rhode Island man were taken to the hospital Saturday after snowmobile crashes in Bingham and Athens.

The accidents in Somerset County were among eight on Friday and Saturday that resulted in riders in Maine going to hospitals for treatment of severe injuries, said Cpl. John MacDonald, of the Maine Warden Service, in a news release.

A teenage boy was taken to the hospital after he was thrown from his snowmobile and knocked unconscious late Saturday morning on a trail in Athens.

The 15-year-old, whose name wasn’t released, crashed when he was driving fast along Interconnecting Trail System trail 84, hit a steep drop and was ejected from the snowmobile, according to the release. The teen’s father found him unconscious around noon Saturday.

The teenager was taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan and treated for a concussion, facial cuts and bruises, and hip and knee injuries.

A Rhode Island man was injured earlier Saturday when he crashed on a Bingham trail, according to the release.

MacDonald said in the release that speed and inexperience probably were the reasons that Jorge M. Amaral, 41, was thrown from his snowmobile around 9 a.m. when he was trying to turn a corner on Interconnecting Trail System trail 87.

He also was taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital, with an arm injury and minor facial cuts, according to the release.

The other six serious snowmobile accidents in the release were reported in Dyer Brook, Fort Kent, Lyman, Greenwood, Acton and Lewiston.
