AUGUSTA — About 20,500 Mainers have chosen an insurance plan on the federally-run exchange under the Affordable Care Act through January.

The new figures released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Wednesday show that about 6,800 Mainers enrolled in plans last month. In January, the department said about 13,700 residents had signed up in the first three months of open enrollment in Maine, one of the 36 states using the website run by the federal government.

The majority of people signing up for plans in Maine are women at 56 percent. Forty percent of Mainers who’ve chosen plans on the exchange or marketplace are between the ages of 55 and 64.

Nationally, about 3.3 million people signed up from last Oct. 1 through Feb. 1.
