ORONO — Messalonskee junior Kristy Prelgovisk won the 100-yard breaststroke at the high school girls Class A state swimming and diving championships Saturday at the University of Maine. Prelgovisk, who also finished second in the 200 individual medley, beat runner-up Olivia Paione of Edward Little by more than two seconds.
Cheverus won the 18-team meet with 294 points to 288 for second-place Brunswick and 230 for Bangor. Messalonskee finished sixth and Cony placed 10th. Bangor’s Emma Waddell set a state record in the 100 butterfly in 54.49 seconds, breaking the old mark by more than a second.
The Messalonskee 200 frestyle relay team of Kenya Whitehead, Amber Sutherland, Ally Fischang and Prelgovisk finished second to Brunswick while the same four swimmers placed fourth in the 200 medley relay. Fischang also finished fourth in the 200 free and fifth in the 100 free.
Cony freshman Anne Guadalupi finished third in the 200 freestyle and third in the 100 backstroke while teammate Kayley McNeff placed fifth in both the 200 and 500 freestyle events.
The competition continues this week at Bowdoin College and the University of Maine. The Class A boys meet will be held at Maine on Monday while the Class B girls will compete Monday and the boys Tuesday, both at Bowdoin.
