Mainers waking up to brush a light layer of snow off their cars for their drive into work Thursday could be in for more of a challenge Friday morning.

“It’s going to get a little bit messy,” said Meteorologist Andy Pohl of the National Weather Service.

Things will kick off in the early hours of Friday morning, but with warm air aloft and colder air below, the region could be in for a mixed bag of snow, sleet or freezing rain.

“It may start off as snow and then go to freezing rain,” Pohl said. “I’m guessing that’s what will happen.”

While less than a 10th of an inch of ice is expected to build up, the roads will likely be covered with snow and ice during the morning commute, Pohl said.

The precipitation will change to all rain by late morning with rising temperatures. Less than half an inch of rain is expected, which should spare the region flooding problems.

“With the snow pack there shouldn’t be any problems,” Pohl said. “It’s going to soak it up like a sponge.”

Sunny skies and 40 degree temperatures are expected on Saturday. Sunday will feature a few more clouds and temperatures in the 30s.

“Unfortunately, after that we go back into the deep freeze,” Pohl said.

Temperatures Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are expected to be in the 20s with overnight lows near single digits.
