A second person has died following a head-on collision last week in Embden, police said.

Ruth Souweine, 67, of Bangor, died Sunday from injuries sustained in the two-car accident that occurred on Route 16, according to a news release Monday morning from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

Thursday at about 4:30 p.m., a 2012 Chevy Malibu driven by Mark R. Schobel collided head on with a 2012 Subaru Outback driven by Ruth Souweine’s husband, Leon Souweine.

Jennifer Nile, 22, a passenger in the Chevy, died shortly after the accident.

Schobel and Souweine were taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Leon Souweine was treated and released from Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan on Thursday.

Schobel was listed in fair condition early Monday afternoon, according to an EMMC spokesman.

The crash, which occurred near Hunnewell Valley Off Road, a popular mud run location, is still under investigation, according to Dale Lancaster, chief deputy for the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

Police have said Schobel was driving east and had just passed another vehicle not involved in the accident when he struck the Outback.

“We are continuing on the investigation and we met this morning to talk about how to move forward in the investigation,” Lancaster said Monday morning. “It’s unfortunate that there was another fatality.”
