MONTPELIER, Vt. — More than a dozen towns say they oppose tar sands oil coming through Vermont.
Voters in 13 towns passed anti-tar sands resolutions at this year’s Town Meeting. Those towns include Albany, Barton, Glover, Hartland, Jay, Richmond, Sheffield, Shelburne, Stannard, Stafford, Sutton, Westmore and Wheelock.
Vermont Public Radio reports that the issue continues to be a staple at town meetings because Portland Pipeline Corp., the South Portland, Maine-based company that owns pipeline in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, has considered using it to transport diluted tar sands bitumen from Canada to Portland, Maine.
The group 350 Vermont says that to date 41 Vermont towns have voted to oppose transporting tar sands oil through the state.
If the company chooses to change the flow, it would incur an environmental review under the state’s land use law, Act 250.
