Woman avoids serious injury

WINTHROP — A local woman was hurt Saturday during a crash police say could have been much worse if not for the women’s defensive driving skills.

Rebecca Struck, 46, of Winthrop, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for observation, said Winthrop Police Officer Kenneth Tabor.

Neither the driver of the other vehicle, Jeffrey Brennan, 60, of Winthrop, nor the 5-year-old boy riding with him, were injured.

The crash occurred around 1:30 p.m., as Struck drove her 2003 Chevy sport utility vehicle east on U.S. Route 202. Brennan’s 2005 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck, which was eastbound, drifted over the yellow line into the westbound lane in front of Progressive Distributors, Tabor said. Struck swerved right, toward the side of the road, to avoid the crash, Tabor said. Brennan’s truck hit Struck’s SUV on the driver’s side door, but Tabor said Struck prevented a head-on crash by swerving to the right.

Both vehicles were totaled, Tabor said.

There were no charges in the crash as of Sunday morning, but Tabor said the investigation was ongoing. It was not yet known what caused Brennan’s truck to cross the centerline.
